RMITV has had one of its busiest years yet with two full seasons of A Life in Crime, Newsline and In Pit Lane going to air, along with brand-new shows The Red Room, Morning Mayhem and It Could Be Worse hitting community television airwaves for the first time on local free-to-air station Channel 31. RMITV also carried on its tradition as being one of the few organisations that allow students to participate in live television production by launching the pilot season of its new flagship show, Studio A, on October 9th, 2008. Hosted by up-and-coming comedian Dave Thornton (nominated Best Newcomer - Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2007), the first live episode featured acclaimed conductor Richard Gill, filmmaker Matt Norman (Salute) and athlete John Steffensen as well as regular segments from several talented Melbourne comedians. Studio A is providing a real opportunity for RMIT students to gain live television experience on a show that is both challenging and exciting. “Studio A is the largest show I have Tech Directed and I feel like I have an input and responsibility for the technical quality of something worthwhile” – Darren McAuliffe (RMIT Audio Visual Technology student), Technical Director of Studio A. "Studio A is the most professional studio show I have worked on in the entirety of my time at RMIT” – Lisa Fagan (RMIT Professional Communication student), Production manager. RMITV also continued its mission to provide students in media-related courses with opportunities to receive training in all areas of studio television. “Studio A has provided me with a real insight into how live television works. The crew are great to work with and everyone will always take the time to train you” – Jennifer Phan (RMIT Media student) – Director’s Assistant. RMITV also held a series of free workshops and provided real hands-on training through ‘RMITV Uplate’, an eight-hour live telethon broadcast on C31 in September to raise money for the Asylum Seeker’s Resource Centre. With crew members swapping roles every hour, there were opportunities for everyone to get a taste of what is possible. |
