So you want to make TV?

Barnaby Flowers - On Set

RMITV is a great place to start.

Hundreds of people working in the Australian and International film and television industry got their start at RMITV. RMITV is one of the few places that allow just about anyone with an idea, develop and produce their own television show - and eventually get it aired across Australia.

Producing is a complicated and sometimes daunting task as there are a lot of factors to consider. It can be particularly intimidating to first timers - and that is why RMITV is here to help!

The first step is, of course, to have a concept. You need an idea for what you show is going to be about. Will it be the latest reality television show? A two-part tele-movie? An action adventure television series? The opportunities are endless. In many ways this is the most difficult part of the production process, as there are no magical rules to follow in order to come up with a great concept!

Once you have that one great idea, the next step is to get to know RMITV a little better, and to figure out whether RMITV is the best place to produce your show! We can provide you with production facilities, equipment, and access to crew - however your show must fit into RMITV's goals. The primary factor to take into account when considering whether RMITV is right for you is to ask yourself "What will my show bring to the student media community?"
This is a huge category, and will be one of the major elements RMITV will look at when considering your show for approval. If you and your production team are students, then that is a great start. Other things to consider are "is my show targeted towards the student demographic?" "will there be training and crewing opportunities for students?" The more your production will bring to the student media community, the more resources you are likely to get from RMITV.

Barnaby Flowers - ScriptAfter you have taken this into account the next step is to obtain a RMITV PROGRAM PROPOSAL KIT(see below). Inside you will find more details about producing a show with RMITV, and a blank proposal document. Fill it out the best you can, then send the proposal to our programming manager . They will get back to you within a week with comments, feedback and suggestions on how to make your proposal the best it can be. This process may be repeated several times until the programming manager is happy with your proposal. This is also your chance to clear up any questions you have about RMITV and what is involved in producing your show with the organisation.
Once both you and the programming manager are happy with your proposal, they will present your proposal to the RMITV board at one of their fortnightly meetings. If your proposal is particularly complicated or out of the norm, you may be asked to attend the meeting as well. The board will then decide what resources RMITV is willing to provide your show, based on your proposal. If the proposal is successful, then congratulations! You are now an official RMITV production .

Once approved, you will start pre-production for your show. This is a lengthy and complicated process, and if at any time during the process you have any questions, please contact RMITV management for advice and suggestions on how to make your production the best it can possibly be.
